Prophecy and its value
Communication is one of the most important attributes of any relationship. This is true both of man and of men and their Creator. The desire to communicate with man created in His image and likeness belonged to God as He initiated it. This was a period of time when He communicated directly with His chosen people:
Exodus 20:19
‘Then they said to Moses, “You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die.”
That day was the very day when they received the Ten Commandments. Scripture continues and presents God’s attitude toward the desire of man:
Deuteronomy 18:17-22
‘And the LORD said to me: ‘What they have spoken is good. ‘I will raise up for them a Prophet like you from among their brethren, and will put My words in His mouth, and He shall speak to them all that I commend Him. ‘And it shall be that whoever will not hear My words, which He speaks in My name, I will require it of him. ‘But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in My name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die.’ “And if you say in your heart, ‘How shall we know the word which the LORD has not spoken?’— “when a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD if the thing does not happen or come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you shall not be afraid of him.’
Since then, communication between man and God, especially in the Old Testament, has been through intermediaries, usually people specially chosen by Him, whom we call prophets. We also meet prophets during the New Testament, and even in the present Church of Jesus Christ. Even the prophet Joel tells us that at the end of time, the Holy Spirit will be like an outpouring on God’s people:
Joel 2:28-29
“And it shall come to pass afterwards That I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. And also, on My menservants and on My maidservants, I will pour out My Spirit in those days.”
Without excluding prophecy, its place and its role, it must be said, that in the New Testament, the Word of God is brought to us through Jesus Christ, who is the incarnate Word, and through the revelations done by God’s Holy Spirit. The Gospel of Luke teaches:
Luke 16:16
“The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it.”
The topic of prophecy and of the prophets are sensitive subjects because they escape from the control of reason and the empirical experience of man. It belongs to the world and the spiritual life, or as the Bible says it belongs to the “powers of the age to come.”
Some theologians claim that the Messianic prophecies were largely “shrouded in mystery” precisely because their interpretation may not be easily available to anyone, before the time of fulfilment.
Without insisting too much on the modes of manifestation, let us just mention that also other non-Christian religions have something to say about prophecies and prophets, those, who serve other spiritual entities other than the God of Christianity, have something to say about this communication which belongs to the spiritual realm much unknown to simple people.
The accuracy and veracity of some prophetic works can also be questioned, but the existence of the prophecy as a fact in itself cannot be denied, nor is it desirable to manifest an attitude of rejection or to blaspheme against the Spirit of prophecy. God is very categorical and drastic when He speaks of His Spirit:
Matthew 12:31-32
“Therefore, I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. “Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”
In fact, the Bible itself says:
1 Thessalonians 5:19-21
“Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies. Test all things; hold fast what is good.”
This is also because prophecy, is one of the most important gifts of the Holy Spirit:
1 Corinthians 12:4-11
“There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gift of healing by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kind of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.”
It can be manifested through dreams, visions or perceptible voices, messages transmitted verbally by angels or revelation within the prophet (in the spirit of the prophet).
When it comes to prophecies and the prophets of today, the Bible also speaks of prudence and discernment between prophets and their prophecies, proving that God watches over His word and sees the attitude of the prophetic receiver. So, He says:
Jeremiah 23:30-32
‘“Therefore behold, I am against the prophets,” says the LORD, “who steal My words every one from his neighbour. “Behold, I am against the prophets,” says the LORD, “who use their tongues and say, ‘He says.’
“Behold, I am against those who prophesy false dreams,” says the LORD, “and tell them, and cause My people to err by their lies and by their recklessness. Yet I did not send them or command them; therefore, they shall not profit this person at all,” says the LORD.”
Thus, in the Old Testament He warns bluntly:
Jeremiah 23:16
“Thus, saith the Lord of hosts: ‘“Do not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you. They make you worthless; They speak a vision of their own heart, not from the mouth of the LORD.”’
This vigilant attitude towards the meaning of the divine message is maintained in the New Testament, where we find warnings again:
Matthew 7:15-16
“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. “You will know them by their fruits.
In addition to vigilance, it also takes patience for the prophecy to pass the test of time. Only after the prophecy is fulfilled does it receive the verdict of its authenticity.
Yes, prophecy can become a spiritual problem with big and heavy consequences when the prophet exceeds his duties and does not remain in the exact terms of the divine message.
But beyond the slippage, this communication, which goes beyond rational understanding, is possible and its very existence can only be denied by those who need additional documentation in this regard.
If we calculate in mathematical probability the possibility of a prophecy being fulfilled, we will clearly understand that there is no “big bang” hazard, chance, chance “like that”. There is clearly the hand of God that orchestrates things, context, events whether personal or collective according to His will and plan.
It would be fitting to mention here the relevant study of seven Messianic prophecies.
Their probability of being fulfilled was found to be 1 in 1038 (1 followed by 38 zeros, or 1 in 100 billion, billions, billions). ***Messianic Prophecy: Compelling Predictions, http://www.messianic-prophecy.net/Messianic-Prophecy.htm
Accidental fulfilment of Bible prophecy is virtually impossible. This is practically ruled out. This impossibility increases (if this is any more necessary!) When we add the condition that they are to be fulfilled by one person.
Specifically, it is stated that the probability of a single person fulfilling only 48 of them over 300 messianic prophecies is 1 in 10,157 (i.e., 1 at 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) *** Peter W. Stoner, Science Speaks: Scientific Proof of the Accuracy of Prophecy and the Bible, Moody Press, Chicago 1963, online: http://www.sciencespeaks.net/
Thus, from the very beginning, it can be said without error, or fear that the accidental fulfilment of Bible prophecy is ruled out from the outset. Their very existence, as well as their fulfilment in time, sometimes after hundreds or thousands of years, is a solid argument not primarily against sceptics, agonists, or atheists, but especially can be a reason for serious and sincere research for better documentation and understanding.
This effort is worthwhile because prophecies are not only about the past and present of our world but also about the future. From Genesis to Revelation, prophecies run through the Bible like a red thread which you cannot avoid. The prophecies have not only a strictly Christian character but also an eschatological one.
In fact, the entire human history is revealed by God through the prophets, and even the story of humanity unfolds in accordance with what they have said by the inspiration of God.
Bible prophecy is directly related to God and the spirit world created by Him, and to His plan for mankind, and of course is directly linked to His omniscience, and His sovereignty over the world and its course.
Referring to biblical prophecy, it should be noted from the outset that they are proof that there is a God, who works beyond human perception, who is not limited by matter or man.
The fulfilment of the prophecies proves that the Bible is true and can be considered credible because it is the Word of God transmitted through the prophetic word or the divine inspiration of His Holy Spirit. This Spirit is called the Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Prophecy. Prophecy connects the kingdom of God with our world with an imperceptible thread. It seems to give us access to God’s plan for a person, people, and the universe.
It is proof that God yearns to speak to humanity as a man speaks to his friend, revealing danger which is in his front to him, advising him, showing him the way to avoid evil, or even warning him of the consequences of falling into disobedience. He does this in the most diverse literary forms, from storytelling, prose, poetry, dialogue, allegory, comparisons, parables, symbols and so on. For the most part, the prophecies provide useful information and hope for the warned person.
Sometimes prophecy is short and to the point, but, as a rule, God provides sufficient and detailed information. The Bible contains writings of many prophets that are mostly considered as prophetic books: the prophet Zechariah; Revelation, Ezekiel, Isaiah, etc.
Prophecies are thought to occupy about 28-30% totally from the Bible. Of the approximate 8,000 prophecies, several thousand have already been fulfilled. And of the approximate 600 Messianic prophecies, which strictly refer to the birth, life, work, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, about 350 prophecies were fulfilled accurately and in detail in Christ. The others prophecies are waiting for the time of their fulfilment which is imminent.
Biblical accuracy is incredible! God is telling the truth. Fulfilled prophecies prove that the Bible is true. It is the written Word of God.
Like the general prophecies, the messianic prophecies proved to be divine messages that were transmitted and fulfilled without fail and on time. They are infallible and present themselves as a true miracle in themselves by their uniqueness, by the way, they were transmitted and the accuracy of their fulfilment in time and in the details.
The Messianic prophecies were transmitted through about twenty-five prophets, who had different education and social status, living in different periods of time and who, of course, did not know Jesus Christ or what God intended to do through Him.
In the face of such reality, which is hidden from our need for knowledge and rational explanations, we cannot say too much, but we can say as the apostle Paul said:
2 Peter 1:19-21
” And so, we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts; knowing came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
The prophecies are clear evidence that God has a plan for our world and a purpose that He is fulfilling in mankind, and about which He gives us news. He desires the active participation of humanity with Him, for the good of man, especially his eternal good.
In the desire to place ourselves within the bounds of a humble attitude of common sense, we do not delve into a subject as delicate as that of prophecy. Those who have the gift of the Holy Spirit could say more about it because they speak from within this subject.
What we would like to do is provide evidence with a list of many of the messianic prophecies in the Old Testament and their fulfilment in the New Testament.
For it is the Spirit of prophecy who bears testimony to Jesus.
Prophecy is the proof of who He is. The Bible is 100 per cent prophetically accurate, which is all documented. The Bible promises a special blessing when you study the book of Revelation. All of the Bible is a blessing, but understanding Revelation we get an extra blessing. Most people will never touch the book of Revelation thinking it’s to hard to understand. But this is far from the truth when Revelation means revealed knowledge:
Revelation 1:3
“Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it because the time is near.”
This verse teaches we should (read) this prophecy. It states (hear) it so pastors should teach it. Hearing is to understand it. The book of Revelation is a gift, not a burden to read. Disease and increased suffering is a sign of the coming of the Lord. Only those who do not know Jesus will be surprised by His coming:
Revelation 22:6-8
“Then he said to me, “These words are faithful and true.” And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent His angel to show His servants the things which must shortly take place. “Behold, I am coming quickly (Blessed) is he who keeps the words of the (prophecy) of this book.”
The Lord God of the holy prophets states He is coming quickly, so heed the words of the book of Revelation. It’s (NOT) ok to not study the book of Revelation. Pastors are called to read, study and preach it. You can’t really grasp the majesty of the Bible without understanding prophecy. 26.8% of the Bible is prophecy which equates to a third of it. The prophecy was used by God through people to give birth to the church we see today. The passion of being filled with the Holy Spirit was very evident at Pentecost.
Can you say that you have ever been filled with so much joy for God?
One thing that quickly becomes clear as we read through the book of Acts 2 is that there is a very close connection between the Spirit of God and the Word. Pentecost is about fiery tongues; prophecy; and sermons. In short, Pentecost is the feast of the Word, driven by a mighty wind of the Spirits power, the apostle Peter begins to preach, and in the course of the sermon, he makes the outstanding point that from now, on, all God’s people will be prophets!
The people were watching, feeling, hearing, and witnessing the power of God while many others thought the chosen filled were drunk. The prophet Joel gave them the prophecy and this was its fulfilment. People are getting dreams and visions from God in the pandemic and miracles are occurring:
Joel 3:1-2
“For behold, in those days and at that time, When I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, And bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat;
And I will enter into judgment with them there On account of My people, My heritage Israel,
Whom they have scattered among the nations; They have also divided up My land.”
Peter didn’t quote Joel as they had not been scattered yet, Jerusalem had not fallen. The land of the Jews was scattered and divided up. In 70AD the Roman general Titus took Jerusalem fulfilling prophesy. Not one Christian was in the city at the time, because they believed the prophecy given, and had departed beforehand. Those that ignored the prophesy suffered torture and death at the hands of the Romans as the city was raised to the ground. They exiled the Jewish people from the land of Israel fulfilling Bible prophecy. For thousands of years, the Jews longed for the prophecy to be fulfilled so one day they would regain Judah and Jerusalem.
In 1897 a man called Theodore Herzl called for a rebirth. Theodor Herzl went from being a middle class, European Jew and journalist to a political thinker and activist, determined to build a Jewish state in the Middle East. He was passionate that they learn and speak Hebrew again as it was now mixed with other cultures. The Zionist movement was picking up strength, then the holocaust took away any hope of continued building. Persecution continued all over the world.
The Russian Empire at one time hosted the largest population of Jews in the world. Within these territories, the primarily Ashkenazi Jewish communities of many different areas flourished for a time. But the spirit of God was at work trying to drive them back to the land of Israel. The idea that God has a special relationship with the nation of Israel does not go down well today. Our society is preoccupied with equality and equal opportunity and pushing the LGBTQ agenda.
Yet the Creator does not have to answer to us for what He does. We view His work from a very short time span, compared with the eternity through which He operates.
May the 14th 1948 they became once again the Jewish nation but without the city of Jerusalem. A day later they were attacked by the Arab League of Nations. This goal was and still is today by many to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. Six nations failed to wipe Israel off the map. Many miracles were reported with soldiers eyes witnessing angels landing on their battle tanks. If we look today Israel is still prodded by the same aggressors with the same goals. Prophecy was again fulfilled.
The word Jehoshaphat (yehoshafat in Hebrew) means ‘God has judged’, and this narrow furrow of land located between Temple Mount/Al-Haram Ash Sharif and the Mount of Olives is where the events of Judgment Day will take place (Joel 3:12) and all nations will be judged. There will be the last Great War at Megiddo before the last great Judgment.
One judgment will be for dividing up God’s land. In 1967 another war took place Israel was attacked again. It was a brief but bloody conflict fought between Israel and the Arab states of Egypt, Syria and Jordan for six days. This was prophesied by Jesus:
Luke 21:8
“And He said: “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them.”
Luke 21:8-24
And He said: “Take heed that you not be deceived. For many will come in My name, saying, ‘I am He,’ and, ‘The time has drawn near.’ Therefore do not go after them. But when you hear of wars and commotions, do not be terrified; for these things must come to pass first, but the end will not come immediately.” Then He said to them, “Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be great earthquakes in various places, and famines and pestilences; and there will be fearful sights and great signs from heaven.”
Yom Kippur is a major Jewish festival. The Israeli army was on leave, and the invasion took them completely by surprise. Lance Lambert a solder informs us that something stopped a massive tank invasion against Israel’s small tank force. Syria had more battle tanks than Hitler’s offensive against Russia totalling 1,200 tanks. Egypt attacked from the South-west with 3,000 tanks, 2,000 heavy guns, 1,000 aircraft and 600,000 men, according to official UN documents. The Egyptians crossed the Suez Canal in force yet something stopped them in their tracks. When the Syrian army launched their attack with 1,200 tanks the Israeli commander reported that he had only two working tanks and ten fit men on duty.
Wave after wave of Syrian tanks bore down on them but when only one mile away, within sight of Galilee, they were also stopped. An Israeli commander said that he saw a great grey hand pressing downwards as if it were holding something back. It was holding back the invading force of tanks and army. This went on until the Israelis could be called out of their synagogues to man their own battle tanks. The tank battle that started is now regarded as the biggest tank battle in history. 4,000 tanks of 900 batteries sparked into action. Russia had organised a massive airlift of arms to Syria and Egypt to equip them for the war ahead. Against overwhelming odds, the invaders were driven right back. They had expected to destroy Israel easily. The prophet Amos concerning the latter days wrote:
Amos 9:14,15
“I will restore the fortunes of my people Israel. I will plant them upon their land, and they shall never again be plucked up out of the land which I have given them,’ says the LORD your God.”
The Book of Amos is a prophetic book of the Hebrew Bible largely dating to the 8th century BCE, hence prophesy was fulfilled. People will be persecuted, martyred, tortured, and put in prisons at the end of days.
If you believe in Jesus He will give you utterance and wisdom, making you a spiritual armoured soldier ready for battle. You may even lose parents and brothers for believing in Him.
We should be keeping an eye on Jerusalem for a long period of time it will be in the hands of gentiles until the time of the gentiles is fulfilled.
In 1967 Jerusalem was given back to the Jews hence fulfilling prophecy. From 1967 onwards after the fulfilment of the gentiles, this is the last generation and the countdown to Christ’s return is coming.
God called for a group of people to be His in the last days to live for the cause.
